A Personal Review of The Handmaid’s Tale

This is the book review of one of my personal favorites — The Handmaid’s Tale. If you are watching the TV series and are anywhere in between The Handmaid’s Tale season one or season 4. Leave now! The post contains spoilers!!!

This bestselling novel by Margaret Atwood belongs to the dystopian genre. Verily, all of you know, the book was first published in the year 1985 and is often cited as “a landmark feminist work.”

It is the story of subjugated women living miserably in a terrifying patriarchal world. Well, this is something all the fans are well aware of. Courtesy, Google.

Definitely, the dystopian tale is set in the near future or maybe the New World. Yes, you heard me right. I called The Republic of Gilead one of the states of the New World. No matter how democratic, advanced, utilitarian the New World Order may sound. Surely enough, it is not the place where a thinking mind will thrive.

Slowly, we are turning into sheep. Nobody questions media. Each and every social media platform has a follow button. We only have access to the information the system wants us to know. An analytical, thinking, reasoning mind is losing ground.

Covet Theme of The Handmaid’s Tale

Women suppression, patriarchy, and theonomic totalitarianism are the evidential themes of The Handmaid’s Tale.

What is the covet theme of the handmaid’s tale?

Mass-dumbing down of the future generation.

Yes, there is a menacing agenda lurking behind everything we do and see. If everything that happens in this book turns out to be true then not only women but men too would lose their independence, identity, and individuality.

As per the law of Gilead, women are vessels. By vessels, it means, they are good for just one thing — reproduction. The commander who sires the handmaid would simply treat her as a vessel that will give him a child. There will be no touching, eye contact, or exchange of words. The Commander cannot go against the law. And the women. Well, women don’t exist as humans but as something less trivial than a plant.

Neither men nor women are able to raise objections.

Why?

The women in the past are ripped off of all rights. Financial, legal, and professional.

What would be the fate of men?

Turn into a sheep.

The men have to either surrender or get slaughtered. Just like sheep.

Even if it is not a true story and is a work of fiction, nobody can vouch it will remain fiction forever. Currently, we are controlled by

  • Harmful technology
  • Fascist regimes
  • Fake news or media propaganda
  • Mass hysteria
  • Financial monopoly

It is no surprise, we will lose touch with humanity soon.

Nobody goes to the park and plays the good old childhood games. Lack of human touch creates a loss of empathy. Two minutes on phone causes two hours of natural brain disruptions.

How much time do you spend on the phone every day?

The longer the duration the greater the harm.

Your future lies in your answer.

Give it a thought.
